Three months with assistance dog Leo
Team 15. January 2026

An experience report from the perspective of a family caregiver

How did you experience the first few weeks with your new assistance dog?

To be honest, the first few weeks with Leo were quite turbulent. Even though we had prepared well and made lots of plans, ME/CFS is a very special disease. Even the best plan can suddenly collapse like a house of cards.

When Leo moved in with us in mid-April, it was a joyful moment – but also a huge change. He had received solid basic training and his first assistance tasks at Helfende Pfoten. His training as a future assistance dog had already begun in September of the previous year. Nevertheless, the actual move was a significant step for all of us.

Suddenly there was another living being that also needed security, structure and reliability – on top of everything else. To be honest, I felt overwhelmed at first.

Were there moments when you doubted?

Yes, absolutely. Almost nothing went right in the first week of training. The weather was wet and cold, my partner had a crash – and Leo and I were both completely overwhelmed. We dutifully took part in the training, but inside I was frustrated.

It wasn’t until we were back home and our everyday life slowly returned that a lot of things fell into place. The routines, the walks – we started to trust each other. And I learned to let go.

What has changed since then?

Leo is now an integral part of our everyday life. He accompanies my partner to appointments and provides me with noticeable relief. At the same time, he is my faithful leisure companion – and often my co-conspirator when it comes to gently sending Tobias off for a well-deserved break.

Sometimes Leo is even quicker than me: then he lies down with Tobias and makes sure that things really calm down. And when I’m in over my head, Leo stands in front of me with little worry lines on his face – as if to say: “Now it’s time for the three of us to take a break.”

How would you describe the first three months overall?

It was an intense three months – exhausting, yes, but also full of small steps forward and wonderful moments. Today, Tobias and Leo can go on short trips without me, for example to the weekly market. And on other days, Leo romps through the countryside with his dog friend Fine.

I wouldn’t want to be without him. With his loving, calm nature, he brings balance and happiness into our lives. And he gives us both something very valuable: trust and shared relief.

And what’s next for you?

In the meantime – it is July – Leo is officially recognized as an assistance dog according to the Assistance Dog Ordinance (AHundV). An important milestone for all of us. We are looking forward to everything that is yet to come – with Leo by our side.
